# SMS

How SMS works over SS7: text messages carried on the signalling control channel between mobile devices, and how TelcoBridges gateways handle them.

Short Message System (SMS) refers to human-readable text messages that can be sent between mobile devices over a control channel using [SS7](/telecom-references/ss7-and-signalling/ss7.md)'s [TCAP](/telecom-references/ss7-and-signalling/tcap.md) functionality.

### TelcoBridges and SMS

TelcoBridges supports the generation and reception of SMS messages on its [Tmedia](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/products/tmedia/tmedia) and Tdev product families. TelcoBridges' also supports SMS messaging as part of a [unified communications](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/products/tmedia/features-and-solutions/solutions/unified-communications) offering combining voice, text messaging and IP-based communications.

The [Tmonitor](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/products/tmonitor/tmonitor) family of network monitoring devices supports the capture of SMS messages for the purposes of [network monitoring](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/products/tmedia/features-and-solutions/features/network-monitoring), [lawful intercept](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/configuration/web-portal-3-3/lawful-intercept), and [location-based services](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/products/tmedia/features-and-solutions/solutions/location-based-services).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/telecom-references/ss7-and-signalling/ss7/sms.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
