# H.248 and MGCP

H.248, also known as Megaco: the protocol a softswitch or media gateway controller uses to control media gateways. Applies to Tmedia 3.2 and 3.3.

Also known as Megaco, H.248 is a protocol for controlling media gateways via a [softswitch](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/products/tmedia/features-and-solutions/solutions/softswitch)/[Media Gateway Controller (MGC)](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/products/tmedia/features-and-solutions/solutions/softswitch).

> **Applies to:** Tmedia 3.2,3.3

### TelcoBridges and H.248

TelcoBridges [Tmedia](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/products/tmedia/tmedia) devices support the H.248 protocol.

TelcoBridges [Tmedia](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/products/tmedia/tmedia) devices can be controlled using the [H.248](/telecom-references/sip-and-voip/h248-mgcp.md) protocol from Media Gateway Controllers (MGC), including, but not limited to, Metaswitch CFS and AMGC, Ribbon C20, Nokia MGC10 and Teles MGC. In this model, the [Tmedia](https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/tmedia-documentation/products/tmedia/tmedia) is a Media Gateway (MG). This solution has been deployed in numerous locations with all of these MGC models.

Call routing functions and subscribers are configured in the MGC. The Media Gateway (MG) has the TDM port configuration for legacy networks and the RTP ports configuration to handle the media. It supports tone detection, tone generation, announcements, fax, modem, and more.

The H.248 configuration can be paired with Sigtran functions (M2UA, M3UA, IUA, V5UA) to support signaling relay to the MGC.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://prosbcdocs.telcobridges.com/telecom-references/sip-and-voip/h248-mgcp.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
